Marine recovers after shooting

A Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Marines told Local 10's Jeff Weinsier that people need to be careful when posting items on Craigslist. Karl Trenker was shot five times Wednesday after meeting with a man who responded to an ad his finacee, Tanya Siaz, had placed on the popular website. One of the bullets grazed the back of Trenker's head. Another went through his chest. Trenker thought he was meeting with someone who was interested in buying the gold necklace his fiancee had posted on Craigslist. "She was going to go and show it to them, but I said, 'No, you don't know who these people are,'" Trenker said. On Friday morning, Trenker spoke exclusively to Local 10 from his hospital room at North Broward Medical Center. He said he was showing one of the suspects the necklace when the man grabbed it and ran off. Trenker said he drove around the area, spotted the suspects and when he approached, was shot. "I knew I was shot," he said. "I just didn't know I was shot that many times. I put my fingers in the holes to stop the bleeding and ran back to the truck and told my kids I had been shot, but not to worry." "He called me and said, 'Honey, I've been shot,'" Siaz said. "I nearly fainted. He saved my life. That would have been me." Trenker credits his military training for saving his life and credits the doctors at North Broward Medical Center. He was in surgery most of the day on Thursday. Part of his intestines had to be removed. Meanwhile, the suspects, James Flournoy and Jeff Steele were both arrested and charged with attempted murder. They are both being held without bond.
