Pompano Beach music teacher Jan Hinton knew she had to do something when she saw the images of hunger and starvation in East Africa on the news.
“I don't see how anyone could not be affected to see all these young children dying of hunger. They just don't have enough food to eat and water to drink. And here we are, we live so well, and it just affected me very badly,” said Hinton.
So she wrote a song. And she’s using that song, “We All Have Our Dreams,” to raise money for the International Rescue Committee. She’s also getting her students at the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale involved in the fundraising effort.
“I never really realized how big a problem this was until I heard her song. I think a lot of people would be shocked to see how much poverty and starvation there was in Africa,” said Kyle Mattone, a student at the Pine Crest School.
“It just seemed wrong, and I wanted to do something to put it right in the smallest way, you know, but do something,” said Hinton.
Hinton hopes by using social media, iTunes and the Internet she will attract worldwide attention with her music to help the 13 million people suffering in the region.
She said 100 percent of the money she collects from the sale of the song will go to the International Rescue Committee, which sends food and medical help to the region.
“We have the potential of raising a lot of money to help this cause. I think you have to believe. You have to think big,” said Hinton.
