A man learned his sentence Thursday after being convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in the death of a pregnant 17-year-old girl.
Edward Babbs was sentenced to two concurrent life sentences without parole in the October 2009 deaths of Stephanie Rabsatt, 17, and her unborn child.
Rabsatt was eight months pregnant when investigators said Babbs shot her in the head and then in the belly. The gunshot severed the umbilical cord, killing mother and child. Rabsatt's body was found in an abandoned car at a Miramar Winn-Dixie.
Prosecutors said they believe Babbs killed Rabsatt because she was carrying his child and he was angry that she wouldn't terminate her pregnancy.
"You've taken it all," said Ricky Rabsatt, Stephanie's father, in court Thursday. "They ought to just hang you and forget about you."
Rabsatt's mother clutched pictures showing her daughter as she faced Babbs.
"Opportunities to say, 'I love you,' are gone," she said.
During the sentencing hearing, Babbs remained silent and expressionless. His attorney asked for an acquittal or a retrial, but neither request was granted.
No one else spoke on Babbs' behalf. In fact, the courtroom was full of people who wanted to see him get the maximum punishment.
The judge agreed and ordered the two life sentences. One was for Stephanie Rabsatt, and the other was for the unborn child.
"For the rest of your life, may you never be free to make your own choices again," said Stephanie Rabsatt's stepmother.
Babbs did not face the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of Stephanie Rabsatt's death.
