The son of the executive vice president of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association is accused of stealing a flat-screen television from an apartment in Homestead.
Steadman Stahl, 18, was arrested Monday. He is charged with burglary to an unoccupied structure, grand theft, and criminal mischief.
According to a police report, surveillance video showed Stahl and a female accomplice inside the laundry room at 421 NE 12th Avenue about 7:40 p.m. Sunday. When they left the laundry room, Stahl had a knife and a rubber hose in his hands.
The maintenance manager told police the water hose to the washing machine was cut off, causing the room to flood. He added that the female accomplice lived in the building with her grandmother.
The female accomplice, whose named isn't mentioned in the police report, told investigators she arrived at her grandmother's apartment with Stahl, who said he needed the hose from the washing machine for his truck.
Stahl and the female accomplice then entered an unoccupied apartment, where Stahl stole a 32-inch Toshiba flat-screen television, said police.
Stahl admitted to stealing the TV and selling it at a pawn shop, said police.
His father, Steadman Stahl, is the executive vice president of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association. The elder Stahl works at the Miami-Dade County Police Department.
The PBA issued a statement Wednesday, saying: "As a father, Mr. Stahl is disappointed and saddened over this incident, as any parent would be. His son is ashamed and knows he must take responsibility for his actions."
