A cigarette lighter was the cause of a lockdown at Broward College's central campus in Davie on Thursday afternoon.

Davie Police reported an armed female student walking around the campus about 1 p.m.

"It was nutty. It was crazy. I had never been in a situation like this before so I had no idea what to do," said Shea Jackson, a student.

Police said a library staffer saw a young woman pull what looked like a gun out of her front pocket then put it away. The staffer called campus police, who activated the college's alert system.

"We just stayed calm. Of course, everyone's loud and crazy, but we stayed low, stayed away from the doors," said Matthew Pompe, a student.

"I tried to leave class when class was over and they locked all the doors and we couldn't leave," said John Mason, another student.

"I was a little nervous because the security guard that told me, he had a seriousness to his face, so I took the threat serious and I guess I went inside to the next building," said student McNeal Cadet

The campus was put on lockdown, which was lifted about an hour later.

According to Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle, a woman believed to have the gun was found, but she was carrying a cigarette lighter that resembles a .22 caliber handgun.

Police were questioning the woman.
