In-person voting continued in Miami-Dade County, where election department officials are preparing for the big day on Tuesday.
On Monday, the line outside the Miami-Dade Elections Department, which is located at 2700 N.W. 87th Avenue in Doral, continued to grow. The Miami-Dade Elections Department extended hours for in-person voters Sunday and Monday, allowing people to walk in and request an absentee ballot. The process also allowed willing voters to fill out a ballot and turn it in on the spot.
Some in the line reported waiting up to four and a half hours.
WHERE TO VOTE: Miami-Dade County
By law, voting early is no longer allowed in Florida after it ended Saturday. However, the law does allow county Supervisor of Elections personnel to accept absentee ballots through election day at their discretion.
"So anybody that can't go to their precinct for some reason on Election Day does have the opportunity to come by here and vote by absentee ballot," said said Christina White with the Miami-Dade Elections Department.
Despite some problems on Sunday, the Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections defended the departments decision to extend the hours for in-person voters, despite some voters being turned away.
"As we all saw on Saturday, there were thousands of voters in line throughout the day and into the evening," Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Penelope Townsley said Monday. "We made the decision to open on Sunday based on those observations."
White said the problems of early voting shouldn't be present on Election Day.
"We've already serviced over 32 percent of our registered voters," said White.
SPECIAL SECTION: Vote 2012
On Tuesday, the elections department will have 8,400 workers at 829 precincts in the county.
Pamela Anderson was one of the volunteers who signed up to help manage the crowds expected on Tuesday.
"Because I don't do anything. I take care of grandkids and I just wanted to do something with the election," said Anderson. "Me and the ladies will be ready here to start work."
Each precinct will have an election specialist there to troubleshoot any problems that arise.
Voters can still pick up an absentee ballot in person through Election Day, but must turn it in at Elections Headquarters by the time polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
