A Broward Sheriff's deputy was killed Sunday afternoon while driving his motorcycle in Oakland Park, officials said.
Deputy John Blackwelder, 45, was off-duty, riding his motorcycle on East Commercial Boulevard and Northeast 3rd Avenue when a driver going the opposite direction made a left-hand turn into Blackwelder's path, according to officials.
Paramedics arrived on the scene, however Blackwelder was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other car in the accident was Stajka Vangov, 75, of Fort Lauderdale. Vangov told Local 10 she is devastated over what happened.
Blackwelder joined the Broward Sheriff's Office in 2000 and left in 2007, but was rehired in 2010. He was assigned to the Pompano Beach district. Neighbors said he also served in Iraq and is survived by two teenage children.
The case is under investigation.
