An armed robbery suspect is recovering in the hospital after being shot by police.
Several law enforcement agencies were involved in the incident.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says an Aventura police officer shot one man following a traffic stop.
Authorities tried to pull over the driver after they say he robbed a convenience store in Dania Beach. It's believed the man is behind a string of similar robberies across South Florida involving convenience stores.
"When I first heard the gun shots, I thought it was children setting off fireworks", said one man who lives near South Ocean Drive and Monroe Street where the shooting happened.
One other person who was in the car was taken into custody.
None of the officers were hurt.
The agent in charge of the case, Officer Bob Breeden, did release the following statement:
“The FDLE in partnership with the North Miami beach and Aventura police departments were investigating a series of armed robberies being committed by individuals in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Tonight, after an armed robbery occurred at a Dania Beach convenience store, an Aventura police officer was involved in a shooting incident while trying to arrest the subjects who were involved in this incident. The investigation is ongoing and further information will be released at a future point.”
