A man charged with running down and killing two bicyclists in Cooper City on Sunday was charged with two counts of first-degree murder Monday morning.
According to BSO, Obrian Ricardo Oakley, 26, was trying to make a fast getaway after he and Sadik Rashad Baxter, 25, were burglarizing cars and homes in the Rock Creek neighborhood early Sunday, said deputies. The pair had broken into five vehicles before a homeowner caught Baxter in the act about 7:05 a.m.
Police say Oakley panicked-- leaving Baxter behind.
As Oakley sped down Palm Avenue in a silver Infiniti, police caught up with him.
"You took off at a high rate of speed-- out of the neighborhood-- it says here-- driving over 100 miles per hour at some point," the judge read from the arrest report Monday morning. "At one point it says that you realized that the police were behind you with the lights on and the sirens were on."
But detectives say Oakley didn't stop. He ran a light and slammed into a red Toyota -- spun out and struck and killed two bicyclists who just happened to be riding by. Chris McDonnell, 61, and 6Dean Amelkin, 60, died instantly. Both are described as long-time cyclists who always put safety first whenever they went out on their bikes. A trail of debris and bike parts littered the road as Oakley ran away on foot.
It would take the work of a BSO chopper and K-9's to finally nab Oakley several hours later. He is now charged with felony murder for the biker deaths. He is being held without bond.
Baxter is only charged for the car burglaries -- a bondable offense, but a probation violation hold will keep him from bonding out of jail.
