Hurricane warning, watches issued as Ernesto strengthens

Hurricane warnings and watches have been issued for Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Belize as Tropical Storm Ernesto strengthened Monday morning.

In the NHC's  11 a.m. advisory Monday, Ernesto was about 190 miles east of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Nicaragua-Honduras border, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph with higher gusts. It was moving west at 9 mph.

The tropical storm is expected to make a gradual turn toward the west-northwest with a further decrease in forward speed during the next 48 hours. The center of will move north of the northeastern coast of Honduras late Monday.

The following warnings and watches are in effect:

A hurricane warning is in effect for Chetumal to Punta Allen on the East coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.A hurricane watch is in effect for the entire coast of Belize. A tropical storm watch is in effect for Grand Cayman, the coast of Honduras from the Honduras-Nicaragua border westward to Punta Castilla.A Hurricane Watch is in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico from Chetumal to Punta gruesa.
