Mayor signs agreement with David Beckham to negotiate sale of Overtown land for soccer stadium

David Beckham's search for a stadium site to place his Major League Soccer team may have gone into extra time, but it appears to have a happy ending.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez told Local 10 News reporter Glenna Milberg that he signed a non-binding letter of intent with Miami Beckham United to negotiate the purchase of land owned by the county.

Beckham is expected to ink the deal on a four-acre site in Overtown.

The deal would come after months of disappointments that saw Beckham get rejected from sites at PortMiami, near the American Airlines Arena and next to Marlins Park.

Gimenez said the site is located near Northwest Sixth Street and Northwest Sixth Avenue near downtown Miami.

The mayor said Beckham's group would pay fair-market value for the property, which is managed by the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department.

Because the stadium would be privately owned, Beckham's group would be responsible for paying annual property taxes.

Just weeks ago, it appeared that Beckham was close to building on land next to Marlins Park in Little Havana. However, property owners on the site were reluctant to offer what the Beckham group believed was a fair price for their land.

Gimenez called the agreement "the most significant step in our collective efforts to make Major League Soccer a reality in Miami-Dade County."

"It is also further confirmation that Miami Beckham United wants its franchise to be in our community," Gimenez said.

The mayor said he expects to finalize the deal with county commissioners in the near future.

Bal Harbour police have arrested a man who they believe is a serial con artist.

Simon Gann, whom police said is also known as "Don Juan the Con Man," was arrested this week on charges of second-degree theft after an extensive investigation.

According to detectives, Gann met a victim in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton South Beach on Sept. 4 while the victim was in South Florida for Labor Day weekend.

Police said Gann told the victim and the victim's friend that he was a professional gambler and convinced the victim to front him money.

"(He) was able to convince him that he had some form of autism that allowed him to read cards and that he was a professional gambler, similar to I guess the movie 'Rain Man,'" Bal Harbour Police Chief Mark Overton said.

Police said the victim pawned a $100,000 Rolex at a North Miami pawn shop, for which he received $20,000.

According to detectives, the group went to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood and played blackjack, where Gann lost $10,000 given to him by the victim. Meanwhile, the victim won $10,000. Police said Gann then wrote the victim a bad check for $20,000.

The victim told police that they all went to the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort at about 3 a.m., where they ordered room service.

Detectives said Gann stole an $850 Louis Vuitton belt, $1,500 Louis Vuitton brown suede loafers, a $590 Louis Vuitton green and yellow shirt and $10,000 in cash from the victim's pants while the victim was showering.

The victim gave police Gann's phone number and photos from his cellphone, helping police track him down.

Police said Gann has committed similar crimes across the country, posing as different people and earning the nickname "Don Juan the con man." Police fear there are more victims out there.

Anyone who believes they have been victimized by Gann is asked to call police.

Flooding is being reported throughout South Florida as Miami broke rainfall records in the area on Friday.

The city received 2.31 inches of rain by 5:56 a.m. Friday, beating the record rainfall of 2.29 inches set in 1997, and more rain is expected throughout the day.

The heavy rain also posed a problem for traffic, in one incident causing a UPS truck to hydroplane on Interstate 75 near the Gratigny Parkway. The driver was not injured.

"The rain is due to a stalled boundary and a lot of moisture has been riding along this stationary front," Local 10 News meteorologist Jennifer Correa said. "Less coverage of rainfall is expected by the noon hour but there will be scattered showers through tomorrow along with cloudy skies."

Some areas where flooding was reported were Alton Road on Miami Beach, 191st Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Aventura and Northwest Seventh Avenue and 23rd Street in Miami.

According to forecasters, temperatures throughout South Florida are expected to stay in the 70s Friday with a north to northeast wind of 5 to 10 mph. Winds are expected to increase on Saturday.

A flood watch remains in effect for South Florida until 7 a.m. Saturday.

Passengers have been cleared to board a Norwegian Sky cruise ship Friday after Miami-Dade police responded to reports of "suspicious activity" at PortMiami Friday, police spokesman Daniel Ferrin said.

Norwegian Sky released a statement just after 3 p.m. saying that a passenger had cleared a pier-side security checkpoint, but boarded the Norwegian Sky without scanning their keycard.

Witnesses told Local 10 News reporter John Turchin that the man's keycard made some kind of noise when it was scanned and he bolted onto the ship.

Cruise line officials said the ship was evacuated by Miami-Dade police and Customs and Border Protection officers and underwent a secondary security sweep as a precaution.

The ship was cleared to sail after the second sweep Friday.

"The vessel has been cleared to sail and guests are now embarking the ship. We expect the ship will arrive in Nassau as scheduled tomorrow morning," Norwegian Cruise Lines said in a statement.

You can see pictures of the crowd that waited to board the ship below.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this delay may have caused and thank our guests for their understanding and cooperation," Norwegian said in a statement.

Local 10 News takes tour of San Bernardino suspects' home

Friendly, young professionals is how a Redlands, California, landlord described two suspects accused in the San Bernardino mass shooting.

“They were just a normal, young couple,” Doyle Miller told Local 10 News reporter Andrew Perez. “I was shocked and appalled, scared, about every emotion you can go through.”

Miller allowed Perez to enter the now-boarded up home of Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik. The apartment showed signs that it had been ransacked by the FBI, among other agencies.

Inside the apartment, where the couple lived with their 6-month-old baby, agents found a dozen pipe bombs and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

New details have emerged about the couple, specifically Malik, who allegedly pledged her support to ISIS on Facebook hours before the massacre.

Malik came to the U.S. last summer from Saudi Arabia on a fiancé visa with Farook, who was a U.S. citizen. Both of the suspects have Pakistani parents, although Malik was raised in Saudi Arabia, and Farook was raised in Chicago and Southern California.

The FBI said the massacre was in part inspired by ISIS, but said workplace issues may have been involved as well.

Authorities said Farook angrily left a holiday work party Wednesday and returned locked and loaded and dressed to kill with his wife.

The couple is accused of killing 14 people and wounding 21 others before being killed in a gun battle with police.

NASA releases clearest images yet of Pluto

Black and white images beamed to Earth could be some of the clearest close-ups of Pluto's surface humans see for decades, NASA says.

The images, taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, show craters, mountains and glacial terrain along a strip 50 miles (80 kilometers) wide.

The spacecraft took them in July during its closest flyby of Pluto --- which is at a distance from Earth that varies from 4.67 billion miles (7.5 billion kilometers) to 2.66 billion miles (4.28 billion kilometers) -- and they were among the most recent batch sent to back to our planet.

"New Horizons thrilled us during the July flyby with the first close images of Pluto, and as the spacecraft transmits the treasure trove of images in its onboard memory back to us, we continue to be amazed by what we see," said John Grunsfeld, a former astronaut and the associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

The images stretch from Pluto's horizon -- about 800 kilometers (500 miles) northwest of Sputnik Planum -- across the al-Idrisi mountains, over the shoreline of Sputnik and across its icy plains, NASA says.

New Horizons sped past Pluto in July but it will take about one year to transfer all the photos and data.

Researchers expect more images to come in over the next week, showing even more terrain at the highest resolution possible.

A Fort Myers man has died after choking on a bison steak he was eating during a celebration of his 57th birthday.

Christopher Russ was enjoying a dirty martini and bison steak during a birthday night out with friends at Ted's Montana Grill in Estero.

"He wanted to go there so bad," landlord Francine Ryan, who was at the dinner, told the Fort Myers News-Press.

Ryan said the steak was a half-foot long and cooked medium rare. She said she took two bites of her meal when she noticed Russ was nearly done.

"He scarfed it down," Ryan told the newspaper.

Restaurant patrons and medics tried to save Russ, but he was declared dead 25 minutes after the choking incident began.

Ryan told the newspaper that the ordeal has made her afraid to eat.

ISIS: San Bernardino shooters 'supporters'

$
0
0

ISIS on Saturday hailed the two people who massacred 14 people in Southern California this week as "supporters" of the terror group -- a message that came after U.S. investigators said they suspect one of the shooters professed loyalty to the Islamist network.

The terror group's official Iraq-based station made the declaration following Wednesday's San Bernardino shooting that also left 21 injured, but -- notable for a group quick to claim attacks -- did not say the couple were members or that ISIS was responsible.

Tashfeen Malik and her husband, Syed Rizwan Farook, sprayed bullets at Farook's co-workers at a holiday party for the environmental health department in San Bernardino before being gunned down in a shootout with authorities the same day.

"We pray to God to accept them as martyrs," ISIS' al-Bayan Radio declared Saturday.

The ISIS radio report came a day after the FBI said it was treating the attack as an act of terrorism.

It also came after reports that Malik made a public declaration of loyalty to ISIS' leader while the attack was underway. Three U.S. officials familiar with the investigation told CNN on Friday that Malik posted to Facebook a pledge of allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The couple's motivation for the attack is a key focus for investigators. But ISIS' acknowledgment of Malik and Farook as supporters doesn't mean they were members or that someone from the group ordered it, said retired Air Force Lt. Col. Rick Francona, a CNN military analyst and a former intelligence officer.

ISIS, when claiming responsibility for other terrorist attacks, would call attackers "knights" or "soldiers" rather than supporters. It has, however, urged sympathizers to carry out attacks on their own.

"What they're calling these two are supporters, which is kind of a lesser level," indicating it might not have had direct contact with the couple, Francona said.

On Saturday morning, officials briefing President Barack Obama about the investigation told him that they had "no indication that the killers were part of an organized group or a broader terrorist cell," the White House said.

'Act of terrorism'

Authorities searched the California house of the person who bought two of the rifles used by Farook, a federal law enforcement source said Saturday.

The source was not at liberty to discuss what was being sought or what was taken away -- if anything -- from the house because the warrant application was filed under seal.

Authorities are turning to phone, travel, computer and other records to determine why the couple committed the attack and had what amounted to a makeshift bomb lab in the rented Redlands townhouse they shared with their 6-month-old daughter.

The FBI took over the investigation from local authorities Friday, saying it was treating the attack as an "act of terrorism."

There was "evidence ... of extreme planning" of the killings, said David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI office in Los Angeles.

The mass shooting may indeed have been inspired by ISIS, a law enforcement official told CNN this week, but no official has told CNN that ISIS directed or ordered the attack.

"This is looking more and more like self-radicalization," a law enforcement official said on condition of anonymity.

A law enforcement source said another option investigators are looking into is whether a workplace issue with religion may have sparked the killings.

One notable piece of evidence will be Malik's alleged online allegiance pledge to al-Baghdadi. Facebook said it took the post down because it violated community standards that prohibit the promotion of terrorism or the glorification of violence.

Facebook declined to go into details about the nature of the post.

Connections to Middle East, Pakistan

Farook, 28, was born in Illinois and raised in California. He traveled twice to Saudi Arabia -- first in 2013 for the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims are required to make at least once in their lifetimes, and then then again to marry Malik, whom he'd met through an online dating service, said Farook family attorney Mohammad Abuershaid.

The FBI said he went to Pakistan as well, but the family attorneys denied that.

Malik was born and raised in Pakistan and moved to Saudi Arabia around the age of 18 or 20, Abuershaid said.

She came to the United States on a fiancée visa and became a legal permanent resident.

Malik was 29, according to her Pakistani national identification card -- a photocopy of which was obtained by CNN from a senior Pakistani intelligence source -- and her marriage certificate.

Investigators are exploring Farook's communications with at least one person who was under investigation for possible terror connections. Some were by phone, some on social media.

"These appear to be soft connections," an official said, meaning they were not frequent contacts. Farook's last communication with the contacts was months ago.

A federal official said Farook has "overseas communications and associations," but it's not yet clear how relevant they are to the shootings. "We don't know yet what they mean," the official said.

The couple did not have any trouble with the law, nor were they on any list of potentially radicalized people.

Relatives had no idea that the couple held radical views, according to family lawyers.

"It just doesn't make sense for these two to be able to act like some kind of Bonnie and Clyde or something," Farook's family attorney David S. Chesley said.

"It's just ridiculous. It doesn't add up."

Weapons everywhere

Shortly after the massacre, authorities searched the couple's house and found pipe bombs, thousands of rounds of ammunition and more guns.

The shooters didn't make it easy for authorities to track their digital footprints. The hard drive from their computer is gone, and two relatively new cell phones were found smashed in a garbage can near the shooting scene, law enforcement officials said.

Investigators believe the shooters left at the massacre site a remote-controlled toy car, strapped with three rudimentary explosive devices. The remote for the car was found inside the SUV where Farook and Malik were later killed, a law enforcement official said.

The pair apparently planned to use the remote to detonate the explosives from a distance, and either it didn't work or they didn't do it, the official said.

Authorities are looking into whether the device was connected in any way to al Qaeda's Inspire magazine, the FBI's Bowdich said this week.

Al Qaeda's Inspire, plus ISIS' Dabiq magazine, are two examples of media the terror networks have used to call on people to commit attacks on their own and give instructions on how to make certain weapons.

"These tips don't require a lot of training or a lot of weaponry," said Don Haider-Markel, political science professor at the University of Kansas. "... They just need a random person here and there who is sort of willing (to act)."
