Hallandale Beach City Commissioners vote to create a lifeguard program after a lifeguard was fired for leaving his assigned post to save a man over the Fourth of July.
The commission voted 5-0 in favor of the program, which will hire lifeguards who are also EMTs. Those lifeguards will cover the entire city beach and the program will be run by the fire department.
The city pools will have a similar program run by the Red Cross.
Tomas Lopez, 21, received a key to the city after he was fired.
The man he saved is now considering a lawsuit.
The company Hallandale Beach used for lifeguards has since resigned.
