Demolition crews knocked down a Central Florida landmark early Sunday morning.

Workers imploded the Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial at 7:30 a.m.

The hospital had been closed since 2009, but the cancer center stayed open one extra year. The entire hospital, including the cancer center, closed in 2010.

Officials said the cost to maintain the empty hospital topped $800,000 a year, and they decided to demolish the hospital to save money.

Workers said they planned to use time detonators to take down the building. The company hired to bring down the landmark is the same company that took down the Amway Arena earlier this year.
