Relatives said a 10-year-old girl injured when a van crashed into her family as they walked away from Marlins Park, killing three of her relatives and the van's driver, is in stable condition.

Magdeline Diaz, 10, underwent surgery after the Saturday crash, her family said.

Her relatives, Esther Terrero, 53, Adriana Diaz, 13, and Franklin Diaz Jr., 14, were killed in the crash.

The driver of the van, Raul Herberto Ortega Arias, 67, also died. Police said they believe Arias may have suffered a heart attack while behind the wheel.

"There are no words to describe the affliction that has overtaken us," the Diaz family said in a statement released Tuesday. "We also express our most sincere sympathy and prayers to the family of Mr. Ortega, who has also lost a loved one. Our family would like to thank the community for your thoughts and prayers, as well as the City of Miami police and fire departments, and the doctors, nurses and staff of Jackson Memorial Hospital for their help and support."

Family friend Edwin Abreu recalled the moment he heard his friend, Abrahan Diaz, tell him on the phone that three members of his family were killed as they left Marlins Park.

"It's very hard because when you know that they are alone here, you can do nothing to try and recover the life, a daughter or son. It's very hard," Abreu said.

Abreu and another family friend, Catriana Jimenez, showed the media a photo of the family taken just moments before the crash.

"They were having a blast. They had a great last time enjoying the Marlins game," Jimenez said. "It's very tough. It's devastating."

Abreu had just reconnected with his friend, Abrahan Diaz, on Facebook after 20 years. They worked together in the Dominican Republic and were getting together Sunday.

"I was expecting, you know, our family was ready on Sunday. I was calling. I didn't receive an answer," Abreu said.

For now, the family is focusing their energy on Magdeline, and they pray for the man who was behind the wheel.

"There's a lot of forgiveness. They could not be more forgiving," Jimenez said. "They feel for him and their loss."

The family set up a fund to help pay for the expenses of the three victims' transportation to the Dominican Republic and their funerals. Anyone who likes to donate can do so at any BB&T branch to the Abrahan Diaz & Esther Terrero Charitable Account, No. 0000240050528.
