The man police say is responsible for stabbing a parking attendant at the shops at Sunset Place in South Miami has turned himself into police.

Officers said Juan Felipe Rodriguez, 19, can be seen in surveillance video getting into an argument with and then stabbing a 24-year-old man working as a parking attendant at about 5 p.m. in the mall parking garage near 57th Street and South Dixie Highway.

Investigators said a dispute over $8 involving Rodriguez, who was leaving the garage escalated into a stabbing. Police said Rodriguez stabbed the parking attendant once in the chest and once in the forearm. He then sat in his truck on the scene for more than a minute, before slamming through a barricade and driving off.

"It went above and beyond for something so stupid as a parking fee," Maj. Rene Landa with the South Miami Police Department said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue flew the injured man to Kendall Regional Medical Center.

The victim, who has worked as a parking attendant at the garage for about a year, was listed in stable condition Tuesday afternoon.

South Miami police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials were at the scene.

Derrick Brown, the general manager of the Shops at Sunset Place, released the following statement Tuesday evening.

"We are deeply concerned about the incident that occurred today, and our thoughts and prayers are with the parking attendant employed by Denison. We do not tolerate criminal behavior at our property, and are working with local authorities on this investigation," he said. "Our main concern is always for the safety and security of our employees and guests."
