Weather permitting, Miami-Dade County will start spraying for mosquitoes Wednesday or Thursday night.
The aerial spraying is meant to reduce the number of mosquitoes in populated areas where bug counts are higher than normal and complaints have increased. The county's public works and waste management department will spray in the following areas:
Homestead/Florida City – From SW 191 Ave to SW 137 Ave, between SW 312 St to SW 360 St. Redlands – SW 232 St to SW 400 St, between SW 192 Ave to SW 227 Ave. East of US1 – From Rickenbacker Causeway to SW 248 St.
The mosquito repllent-spraying plane will be flying as low as 150 feet. Beekeepers are asked to keep their bees covered during the spraying operations in their particular area. Individuals with known allergic reactions should remain indoors.
Miami-Dade residents can help reduce the nuisance caused by mosquitoes by remembering the “five Ds:”
Dusk and Dawn—avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active. Dress—wear long, loose, light-colored clothing that covers the skin. DEET—use mosquito repellants that contain DEET Drainage—eliminate standing water around the home in places such as buckets, cans, old tires, and plant containers.
Residents who have questions about the aerial spraying, or complaints about mosquitoes, can call the County’s Answer Center at 3-1-1.
