A man was injured Thursday afternoon in a deputy-involved shooting in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff's Office said..

BSO said the incident began just after noon at 461 NE 29th St. Deputies said a man was parked in a Toyota Echo and acting "suspiciously" when two officers walked up to him.

"(The car) was backed into a space in this residential area," said Dani Moschella, of BSO. "As they approached, the sole occupant attempted to hide."

Instead of rolling down his window, deputies said, the man raced toward a female officer, running into her leg.

"She was in fear for her life, which is why she fired her weapon," Moschella said. "(She) fired several shots into the vehicle. He was hit a few times and fled."

A mile away, the man abandoned the car and ran into a stranger's back yard. While bleeding on a patio, the man asked the residents to call BSO.

"He bailed out of his vehicle and ran into a residential area, where he asked homeowners to call 911," Moschella said.

BSO said the man initially told 911 dispatchers he was the victim of a stabbing, but when rescuers arrived, they said they found out he was the man whom deputies had shot.

"It's unclear at this time why he decided to accelerate towards the detective and to try to flee instead of just having a conversation with detectives," Moschella said.

The man was taken to North Broward Medical Center for treatment.

"He is in critical condition, but he is expected to survive," Moschella said.

The deputy was not seriously injured.
