A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy shot a pit bull Monday afternoon in Pompano Beach, BSO said.
The incident occurred in the 4200 block of North Federal Highway.
BSO said a deputy was called to a hotel because a woman did not pay her bill. According to BSO, the woman rigged the door so it could not be opened. When the deputy got through the door, a pit bull charged at him, almost getting to his throat, police said.
The deputy shot the pit bull, injuring it.
BSO initially said the dog had died, but investigators said later Monday afternoon that the animal was taken to Coral Springs Animal Hospital in critical condition.
The dog's owner was taken into custody, BSO said. It is unclear what charges the owner will face.
Pompano Beach Animal Care took custody of the owner's other dog, a Dachshund.
