Family celebrates Leap Year baby

It's an event that comes around once every four years, but some South Florida families will celebrate it for a lifetime.

That's because their new bundles of joy were born on a leap day. The chance of being born on February 29th is 1 in 1460.

But little Danee McLean beat the odds. She arrived at 10:52 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Regional Hospital. She weighed six pounds, 10 ounces.

Her arrival was a bit of a surprise. Her mother and father thought they had a few more days to prepare because Danee wasn't due until March 2nd.

"We were all guessing dates and somebody called me yesterday and said she's going to be born today and I didn't believe it," said father Damon McLean.

"Not many persons are born on that day, so I think it's a blessing and she's healthy so that's my main concern," Ayondi McLean, the girl’s mother.

It may be a few years before little Danee understands why her birthday is only on the calendar once every four years.  But mom and dad have already figured out how to make it up to her.

"She can have two birthdays next year, the 28th of February and the first of March," Ayondi McLead said.

There were seven babies born at Memorial Regional Wednesday, but at Memorial in Miramar, where they usually schedule 8-10 c-section or induction births per day, there were none.

A hospital spokeswoman said that’s an indication that some people chose not to have their babies born on February 29th.
