This isn't just a story about nine stolen kayaks. It's a story about what thieves really took from hundreds of special needs campers at Shake-A-Leg Miami.
"They (the kayaks) mean a lot," said camper Justin Autoin.
Kids like Carla Herrera, who has a combination of autism and cerebral palsy, used the kayaks to build upper body strength.
Herrera used one Wednesday with a huge smile spread across her face.
"What tells me we are on the right track is her face, that big smile. 'I'm doing it, I'm doing it,'" said Carla's mom, Yolanda Herrera. "Nothing compares to that."
The kayaks are a form of therapy, but last week, nine of them disappeared.
Shake-A-Leg organizers said the kayaks -- each worth $800 -- were stolen from a dock just yards from Monty's.
"It was a terrible hit cause it's right in the middle of camp and we've exhausted everything that was made," said camp director Craig Kirk.
Kirk said Shake-A-Leg, a nonprofit organization, has no money in the budget to replace what was stolen.
