Miami Police said an officer was forced to open fire on a suspect in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami Wednesday night.

At approximately 8 p.m., near NW 17th Avenue and 3rd Street, an officer was attempting to stop a driver wanted in connection with a narcotics investigation, police said.

One witness said the driver pulled out a gun after being stopped.

"The officer was forced to fire. Now, as to what actually took place, we're trying to unravel," said Miami Police spokesperson Kenia Reyes.

The suspect was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital and is undergoing surgery, according to Reyes.

The condition of the officer was not immediately known.

The investigation continues.
