Investigators seized bags containing 3,500 pounds of marijuana Friday after they were brought to shore at the U.S. Coast Guard base on Miami Beach.
Lieutenant Mario Gil said sailors noticed a suspicious vessel and when they tried to stop it, the men onboard threw the bags into the water.
The criminals got away, but they left behind the pot with a wholesale value of about $3 million. Investigators say the street value could be double or triple that number.
The Coast Guard called the seizure a a win in the war on drugs.
