Pope Benedict XVI has named a Key West church as a Minor Basilica.
St. Mary Star of the Sea was established in 1846.
It is the oldest church in the Archdiocese of Miami. St. Mary Star of the Sea will become Miami's first Minor Basilica and the fifth in Florida.
Last year, Archbishop Thomas Wenski made the official request for the designation.
A mass with the conferral of the insignia of a basilica will be celebrated on May 31st.
