A 13-year-old Pembroke Pines student is one of 11 finalists competing for the top prize in the National Spelling Bee.
Christal Schermeister, a home-schooled 8th grader, participated in her first spelling bee at age six, and this year is making her second appearance in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She tied for 22nd place in last year's competition.
