A movement to limit the amount of time Miami-Dade County commissioners can stay in office moved forward Thursday.
The Miami Voice political action committee wants to limit commissioners to two four-year terms in office. The head of Miami Voice, Vanessa Brito, turned in a petition for approval by the Clerk of Courts office.
If the wording is approved, Brito must collect signatures from 10 percent of voters in the county, or about 120,000 signatures, in order for the measure to appear on the November ballot.
Although similar measures have appeared on ballots in the past, this time the term limits are not paired with a host of other reforms, such as salaries for the commissioners.
“One question, just on term limits -- it’s eight years, a maximum of eight years, two terms of four years. There’s no package. There’s no salary. There’s no restriction on outside employment. We’re just focusing on this one initiative,” Brito said. “I think that because of the apathy that exists and the lack of support for the sitting commissioners, voters are not going to approve such a high salary, and they don’t want them to have a salary.”
Brito and Miami Voice were behind the successful recall of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natacha Seijas last year.
