An Ohio man who was working to build an orphanage in Haiti has died after being shot and robbed in Port-au-Prince.

Jackson Memorial Hospital confirmed Thursday that David Bompart, 50, of Columbus, Ohio, died.

Bompart's wife, Nicolle Bompart, said her husband was shot Jan. 24 as he was leaving a bank in Haiti with money for an orphanage the couple was building there.

Bompart had two surgeries at Hospital Bernard Mevs Project Medishare in Haiti -- a hospital he helped to build -- before being flown to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

He arrived at Jackson in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.

David Bompart's family stayed by his bedside, praying for his recovery, for more than a week. But on Thursday afternoon, news of David Bompart's death was released over Twitter.

Project Medishare sent out the tweet that said, "It's with great sadness that we confirm a member of our Medishare family, David 'Big Dave' Bompart has passed."

"It's like losing a member of your family. I mean, he was so loved," said Dr. Barth Green, of the University of Miami Medical Center. "He was not just a leader of our whole warehousing, supplies, logistics and someone who could solve any problem, but he was an amazing human being."

Green knew Bompart from his volunteer work with Project Medishare in Haiti. Bompart had helped there since the 2010 earthquake.

Nicolle Bompart has said she does not blame anyone in Haiti and that her husband was doing what he loved. On Thursday afternoon, the Bompart family released a statement via Project Medishare saying that the couple's organization, Eyes Wide Open International, plans to continue to build the orphanage in Haiti and help widows and orphas there "because it is what Big Dave would have wanted." David Bompart did not have medical insurance, and his family is facing the bills from his care. Click here for information on how to help pay for Bompart's medical bills.
