An American bulldog mix on the brink of death is now being given a second chance, thanks to the kindness of a network of strangers in South Florida.
On Friday, the skinny, lethargic, female dog was found laying by a fence at Madie Ives Elementary School in North Miami Beach by a group of students at recess. When the kids alerted teachers to their discovery, it wasn’t clear if the timid dog had been abused by humans or attacked by other animals; she had scar tissue on her neck and a deep cut near her ear. Even worse: she couldn’t walk.
A staff member took her to Kind Animal Hospital in North Miami Beach where she was treated and assessed for free. A teacher kept the dog and began feeding her and nursing her to health. A Facebook post led to an outpouring of concern.
By Monday, when no one claimed to have owned the dog, rescuers at Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Wellington said they would take her in. According to its website, the mission of the ranch is to “provide shelter, care and affection to homeless and unwanted dogs of all breeds and to adopt them out to loving human companions.”
The dog, who teachers affectionately named Madie after the school where she was found, may soon get the loving home generous South Floridians knew she deserved.
