Police arrested a man suspected of robbing a cab driver in Fort Lauderdale.
Autuan Antonio Knowles, of Wilton Manors, was arrested Tuesday. He is charged with robbery with a firearm and violation of probation.
According to police, the armed robbery happened at 1318 NW 7th Court about 1:30 a.m. Feb. 1.
Onondieu Demelus, a driver for the Yellow Cab Company, was dispatched to Plantation General Hospital to pick up Knowles, say police.
Demelus took Knowles, 32, to the address, and when they arrived, Knowles told Demelus he was armed and demanded Demelus' things, say police.
"When I pull over, he say, 'Hey, guy, give me all things you have. If you don't give me (everything), I'm going to shoot you,'" said Demelus.
Demelus then told Knowles there were security cameras inside the cab, but he continued yelling his demands and reached towards his waistband, say police.
"I pull him, I get my seatbelt, I leave it," said Demelus. "I take my seatbelt out and I go out. I let him drop everything I got. When the guy say, 'He got a gun,' but you never know."
Knowles took Demelus' GPS, iPhone, and an undisclosed amount of cash before running away, say police.
When asked why he first fought back, Demelus said he didn't think about what could have happened.
"Job is dangerous because when you get a customer, you don't know which one you get," he said. "You don't know what kind of people you get. You scared about a gun. You scared about the people."
