A memorial with teddy bears and candles continued to grow Wednesday at the spot where 7-year-old Ameer Blair was hit by a car and killed.

It happened Tuesday night shortly after sundown on Southwest 268th Street near Southwest 135th Avenue in southwest Miami-Dade.

Police said Donelle Griffin, 42, was walking across the street with her son, Ameer, and her 8-year-old nephew, Jaheim Haddo, when they were hit by a green Crown Victoria driven by Dagoberto Trevino.

Witnesses said Trevino was speeding, but police are still investigating.

"There were no skid marks, no indication that he tried to stop at all," said Tina Haddo, Ameer's aunt. "He said he didn't see them. How could you not see three people? He ran all three of them over."

Trevino's sister, Esperanza Trevino, was at the scene, visibly upset and talking to her brother by cellphone as he was being questioned by police.

"I am just worried, and he is worried,” she said.

When asked whether her brother remembered seeing the children, Esperanza Trevino said, “No, he doesn't remember anything. He is in shock."

Griffin's family said she is seriously hurt and needed surgery Wednesday. Jaheim came away with a broken leg.

"When we were crossing the street, he hit us with the car," Jaheim said Wednesday.

"I just wish he could come back, and I wish my mom could get better," said Jahmyia Blair, Ameer's sister.

There is a surveillance camera on the corner of a nearby building, and it appears to be directly trained on the spot where the accident occurred. Local 10 asked the manager of the supermarket if she would release that video, and she said no.

But a traffic homicide investigator showed up shortly after Local 10’s request, taking pictures and wanting the surveillance video.

"They need to put lights in here because it is super dark at night time," said Michelle Green, who lives nearby.

Green said people jaywalk there all the time because there is not a crosswalk nearby. She said her cousin was hit at the same spot a year ago.

"In the neighborhood, this area is known as ‘stop and kill’ because it is so dangerous, and they have multiple accidents here. It is ridiculous dangerous here," Green said.
