No one was seriously injured after a fire nearly destroyed an apartment building in Deerfield Beach Monday evening.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue workers put out flames at the Lime Tree apartments at 1180 SE 4th Ave. after getting a call at around 6:40 p.m. Five apartment units were affected.

"When our crews arrived they reported a fully involved structure fire and struck a second fire alarm," BSO District Fire Chief Chad Brocato said.

No victims were found and one person was treated for a medical condition, the sheriff's office said.

One woman was helping a mother cat that had given birth to kittens three days earlier get oxygen after being rescued.

Janelle Cunningham told Local 10's Baron James that she heard the fire alarms going off from her apartment building, across the street.

"I heard the alarm and I didn't know what it was because I knew it sounded different than a car alarm so I looked out the window and I saw the smoke," she said.

Cunningham said the fire was initially just in one unit, but spread to the rest of the building in a matter of minutes.

Fire officials said there was still a lot of smoke in the building Monday night and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
