The project to overhaul the SR 836/826 interchange is six years and $500,000 million in the making.

Oscar Gonzalez with the Florida Department of Transportation knows drivers' patience has been tested.

"We ask patience from drivers. At the end of the tunnel will be a vastly improved interchange," Gonzalez said.

Beginning Friday morning, drivers on the Dolphin Expressway westbound wanting to get onto the Palmetto Expressway north will use a new, temporary ramp.

Gonzalez stressed the importance of paying attention to road signs. Drivers will need to exit about 800 feet earlier.

"That sign that says Palmetto Expressway north, which is right now at the entrance of the existing ramp, will be moved further to the east," said Gonzalez.

Drivers wanting to take the 826 south already saw changes in February when the flyover was removed.

When the project is scheduled to be completed in fall of 2015, the interchange will consist of four levels and more lanes.

From 11 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday, drivers might see lane a lane closure on the 836 westbound at Northwest 72nd Avenue.
