Thousands of families lined up in Hallandale Beach to receive a free turkey with trimmings one day before Thanksgiving.
"It is hard, it is really hard. We are not able to afford it but thank God we have people who care about us," said Luther Delva.
This is the 21st year that the Hallandale Food Pantry has given away turkeys. The giveaway began with 13 families but the pantry now serves more than 13,000.
"Can't afford it now. You have to pay bills. Things are very very tight for us. 'So how do you feel now?' Oh, much better," said Marie Ellie.
The Miami Marlins partnered with the pantry. The team expects to give away more than 2,000 turkeys in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties.
Marlins President David Samson said the giveaways aren't a publicity stunt to repair the team's tarnished image.
"This gets planned a year in advance and when we talk to the families in line getting turkeys, they are not really interested in who is playing or who is not playing," said Samson. "They are actually interested in having food and having food on the table, so I think it is important to keep your eye on the ball and realize that counts more than just about anything."
