A Miami-Dade student was hospitalized early Tuesday morning after being shot by another student while on a school bus.
The 13-year-old girl was shot in the area of SW 292nd Street and 137th Avenue before 7 a.m.
According to Miami-Dade County Police, the student was riding in a private-chartered school bus when the shooting occurred. The bus was carrying students from three different charter schools -- Somerset Academy Silver Palms, Summerville Charter School, and Palm Glades Academy.
Police were interviewing about a dozen students who were riding the bus at the time of the shooting.
The student who shot the girl was taken into custody.
EMBED SLIDESHOW
Detective Alvaro Zabaleta confirmed that the girl was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital. Sources told Local 10 that the girl was in serious condition.
Four Miami-Dade Police officers were at Miami Children's Hospital shortly after the shooting.
Local 10's Carlos Suarez spoke to the mother of a student who was also riding the bus at the time. She said the driver had just started the route.
"I'm lucky that my daughter had a cellphone and I'm able to talk to her and that she's okay and my other daughter's okay and I'm just praying that the other -- whoever it is that went to the hospital, that they're okay," said Maria Ramiro.
The principal of Somerset Academy Silver Palms called in counselors. Several had arrived by 10:30 a.m. It's unclear if that's the school where the shooting victim attends.
