According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Peterbilt tractor trailer entered the path of a freightliner as it was crossing Okeechobee's eastbound travel lanes.
The freightliner failed to come to a stop in a timely manner before it collided with the rear trailer of the Peterbilt truck and split one of the trailers in two.
As a result of the impact, the freightliner was engulfed in flames and was sent into the canal.
"The impact split it in half," said FHP trooper Joe Sanchez.
Lazaro Rojas, 56, of Hialeah, the driver of the Peterbilt truck, survived the crash.
Two other people who were inside the cab with Salazar when it went into the canal were injured and rushed to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately released.
"One was able to get out and climb out of the canal and the other was able to survive by finding an air pocket in the cab," said Sanchez.
Divers went into the canal and pulled Salazar's body out of the water.
Police said it was unclear whether Salazar was ejected due to the crash or escaped the fire but drowned in the canal.
The Florida Highway Patrol said thousands of packages of sugar that were inside those tractor trailers spilled into the roadway.
Okeechobee Road reopened at about 4 p.m.
