A hurricane warning has been issued for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Sandy approaches and is expected to strengthen.
In the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. advisory, Sandy was about 300 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. It was moving north-northeast at 5 mph.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Jamaica.
A hurricane watch is in effect for the Cuban provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, and Guantanamo.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for Haiti and the central and southeastern Bahamas.
Sandy is forecast to be over or near Jamaica on Wednesday and approach eastern Cuba on Wednesday evening. Sandy is forecast to be a hurricane when it approaches Jamaica on Wednesday.
