Car charging stations pop up across South Florida

Electric car charging stations are popping up all across South Florida.

"You pull up your car to an electric charging station -- you plug your car in. It's that simple,” says Michael Farkas, CEO and co-founder of Car Charging.

Car Charging began development three years ago while eyeing the changing technology of transportation from gas to electricity in a multi-billion dollar industry.

“It's almost like a field of dreams," said Farkas. "We need to build these things in a chicken and egg situation. We need to install this infrastructure so that people feel comfortable enough to buy electric cars."

So, now you will find fourteen, and counting, of the public charging stations across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The first station was opened in Miami Beach on October 3.

Customers can sign up by setting up an account online, but the technology of electric cars is even linked to your cell phone. With the car charging Smartphone app, you can start your charge, check the status of your charge, and will even get a text when your battery is full and ready to go and you can always look for the locations of the nearest charging station.

It will cost 49 cents per kilowatt hour.

"The reason why we charge per kilowatt hour is because each car charges at a different rate and they have different capacities," said Farkas

They all vary and depend on style, make and model but most cars travel about three miles per kilowatt hour.

However, each type has a different battery.

A full charge in a Chevy Volt can cost as little as $4, while the Nissan Leaf and the electric Ford Focus may run you up to $12 dollars for a filled battery. The Tesla Model S can cost up to $20.

All charges are courtesy of the new pumps, which can be found in parking garages, hotels and condos and even the Aventura Mall.
