A pregnant woman's decision to stop at an ATM on New Year's Eve resulted in an unexpected trip to the hospital to give birth.
Ana Johana Irias, 26, was standing in line to collect cash from a bank machine when a teenager on a bike rode by and snatched an $800 gold chain from her neck.
It happened just after 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bank of America ATM at Northwest 36th Street and 13th Avenue in Miami.
"My first reaction was just jump in the car and chase him," said Irias who instead chased him on foot. "It might have been dumb going after him but it was just impulse. I wasn't thinking."
Irias gave up after the crook hopped a fence. The 26-year old expectant mother told Local 10's Terrell Forney that she immediately began to feel sick.
"I felt dizzy and nauseated," she said.
Police convinced her to be checked out where doctors at Jackson-Memorial Hospital discovered she was dilating quickly and decided to keep her overnight even though her baby girl wasn't due for another three weeks.
At 12:15 a.m. New Year's Day, a healthy 6 pound, 6 ounce baby girl named Kimberly pushed her way into the world becoming one of the first babies to be born in 2012.
Irias never got her gold chain back that she says has high sentimental value but she has her new bundle of joy who will one day learn of the serious twist of events that brought on her quick arrival to the world.
The mother, who has two other kids, wishes the best on the person who robbed her.
"I just pray for him. I just pray that God will do his side of his job and bless him regardless. He just needs to think more. Anything could have happened," said Irias.
