An area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico is being monitored by the National Hurricane Center. As of 11 a.m. Thursday, it was given a 40 percent chance of developing into a tropical system. The low, combined with a cold front slipping across Florida early next week, is expected to increase rain chances for South Florida on Monday and Tuesday.
In the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. advisory Thursday, Hurricane Leslie was about 430 miles south-southeast of Bermuda. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour and was moving north at 2 mph. The NHC says this will not pose a threat to the United States.
Early Thursday morning, Hurricane Michael was upgraded to a Category 3 storm, making it the first major hurricane of the season. As of the 11 a.m. advisory, it had maximum sustained winds of 115 miles per hour, gusting up to 140 mph, and was located 980 miles west-southwest of the Azores. The system was moving north northeast at 7 mph. The NHC says the system does not pose a threat to the United States.
