Living in South Florida, most people have at least seen a snake or two.
But would you know what to do if you or a family member ever got bitten by one?
Dr. Randy Katz with Memorial Regional Hospital said he sees plenty of snake bite victims in the emergency room.
"There are about seven different types of venomous snakes in the state of Florida, so they are very common, and not every bite needs antivenom but snake bites can potentially be very life-threatening," said Dr. Katz.
Dr. Katz said don't worry about figuring out what type of snake bit you or try to catch it.
"Just come to the hospital. There are things we can look for from a clinical standpoint that will tell us if you need antivenom," said Dr. Katz.
The doctor said you should try to stay still if you can, and keep the part that was bitten below the heart. That will reduce the amount of blood flow returned to the heart and hopefully reduce the amount of antivenom that's released into the bloodstream.
There are also plenty of old wives tale's out there when it comes to treating snake bites.
"You definitely don't want to suck the venom out of the wound, you don't want to apply a tourniquet, so those are things that people think traditionally that they are supposed to do that you're not," said Dr. Katz.
