Police have taken a man into custody after a woman and her dog were stabbed to death in a Miami Gardens home late Monday night.

Police were called to the home in the 4500 block of NW 180th Street just after 10:30 p.m. That's where officers found a bloody trail leading into the home where two women and a dog had been stabbed.

One of the woman had already died when police arrived. Her family identified her as Terrilyn Gray.

Gray's daughter, 22-year old Curtina Gray, was taken to Jackson North Hospital from where she was later released.

The family dog was also killed. The family believed it tried to protect the women.

"He would protect the neighbors. He would bark if he heard noises," said Shalonda Walker, a neighbor.

Police said Alfonso Lucas, Terrilyn's boyfriend, turned himself in overnight. He had reportedly moved out of the house about two weeks ago.

"That's what I don't understand. You went dancing with her Sunday -- what made you do that on Monday," said Lashonda Bowden, Gray's cousin.

"It's just shock that he would do something like this. It's just hard to believe," said Karen Miller, Gray's aunt.

Lucas is being called a person of interest in the case. He has not been charged.
