Deputies say man threatened teacher with gun at Florida football game

Authorities have arrested a man they say threatened a teacher with a gun at a Seminole High School football game.

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies say students were hanging out in the parking lot during a football game Friday night when 28-year-old Matthew Caulfield walked up and started provoking the students.

A teacher, Joshua Walker, overheard the argument and confronted Caulfield.

Witnesses say Caulfield threatened Walker, telling him he would shoot him and displayed a .40 caliber handgun tucked in his pants.

Authorities said Caulfield didn't appear to know the teacher or the group of students and that alcohol may have played a role.

Caulfield was charged with aggravated assault on a school board employee, possession of a firearm at a school event, carrying a concealed weapon and trespassing on school grounds.

Woman turns herself in to police in armed Walgreens robbery

A 27-year-old woman has turned herself in to police in the armed robbery of a Walgreens store in southwest Miami-Dade County.

Marquashaw Seymour was arrested Saturday on one count of armed robbery. She appeared in bond court on Monday, where a judge ordered that she be held in jail without bond.

The robbery was reported Sept. 4 at the store at 15255 SW 137th Ave.

Surveillance video from the store showed a woman, believed to be Seymour, walking up to an employee at the cash register as an unidentified man pretended to be purchasing items, police said.

According to detectives, Seymour pretended that she didn't know the so-called customer and told him to leave with the merchandise. They said she pointed a gun at the employee and told him to open the cash register.

The employee opened the register and handed Seymour more than $200, police said.

Police said Seymour left the store with the cash and some groceries.

Police are still searching for the man involved in the robbery.

Keeping your safe protected from burglars

0

Burglars aren't just after televisions and jewelry when they break into houses. Law enforcement officials said more thieves are now going after victims' identities.

"They start with burglaries, they get your identity and eventually it leads to fraud," Broward Sheriff's Office Detective Javier Duran said.

Some crime prevention experts think storing sensitive documents like passports and birth certificates in a safe is a good defense against burglars.

Cesar Montalvo with ASAP Locksmith in Hallandale Beach said there is a variety of safes that are effective, but homeowners should do their homework.

Montalvo said a good safe should be fire rated and burglary rated. According to American Security Products Co., a burglary rating "signifies a combination-locked safe designed to offer a moderate degree of protection against attack by common mechanical and electrical hand tools and any combination of these means."

Montalvo pointed to a safe in stock at the store that is popular with customers.

"This has to cook at 350 degrees consistently for one hour before anything inside starts to incinerate," he said.

Montalvo also said homeowners should be creative with where they put their safes.

"You have to think outside of the box when you think about storage for your safes. Burglars are going to go straight to bedrooms," he said.

Instead, think about your kitchen pantry, or places that would not be enticing to a burglar.

"I've had customers put safes in a linen closet," Montalvo said. "I've had a customer that put a safe in the garage and she parks her car over the safe."

Crime prevention experts said another layer of deterrents, like a safe, is an effective tool against crime.

New Broward Sheriff's Office 'Israel Mobiles' denounced as campaign ploy

0
0

Is it policing or just politics? That's what some are wondering about five taxpayer-financed Broward Sheriff's Office cars festooned with larger-than-life images of Sheriff Scott Israel next to his name. The cars are expected to be assigned to members of Israel's Community Outreach team, which itself has been staffed by several of the sheriff's campaign supporters.

One of those balking at the new cars is Willie Jones, a retired Sheriff's Office sergeant now running against Israel for sheriff, who said he couldn't believe it when someone showed him a photo of one of the cars. Jones alleged it was an election-year tactic.

When asked if he considered the cars a rolling campaign ad, he answered, "If they're not, they look like them."

The photo of Israel in uniform seen on the Sheriff's Office cars is indeed the same one he features on his campaign website. While there are no laws forbidding politicians from using their elected office for self-promotion, Jones said the cars raise both ethical concerns and questions about fairness.

"I would like free advertisement," said Jones. "People should always believe that the top cop in Broward County is above reproach."

Before he was elected, Israel criticized his opponent, then-Sheriff Al Lamberti, for having his likeness on the side of trucks used for so-called "Shred-A-Thons" of documents for the public. But once he was elected, Israel continued the practice, only with his image rather than Lamberti's. When he was sworn into office in 2013, he promised to "depoliticize BSO."

"If we're doing our jobs right and I'm looking good, we'll get re-elected," he told deputies at that time.

But soon after, Israel hired several political supporters at BSO as aides for his newly formed Community Outreach division, including campaign fundraiser Stephen Greenberger, newspaper reporter Elgin Jones, campaign volunteer Harrison Grandwilliams, campaign supporter Lynn Reich, Democratic activist Patti Lynn and others from the political world. It is for that unit that the five cars are earmarked for assignment.

The sheriff refused an interview request, but BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said the costs of the initiative isn't yet known and said that the design featuring Israel's photo isn't yet finalized. She also said the sheriff wasn't involved in approving the design and the final look for the cars may change before they officially hit the road.

Like Israel, before him, Jones says he would cleanse the Sheriff's Office of politics if elected.

"Once I become sheriff we are going to take the politics out of policing," he vowed.

A man has been arrested after he allegedly struck his mother with his car Monday afternoon at North Miami Beach High School, police said.

Miami-Dade police said the driver fled the scene and was found in the area of Northwest 167th Street and Second Avenue just east of the Golden Glades Interchange.

Police said the suspect, who has not been identified, is charged with fleeing and eluding, aggravated assault and resisting without violence.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools police is handling the investigation and told Local 10 News that the suspect was visiting his mother, who is a teacher at the school.

Police said the woman was taken to a hospital.

The school district released a statement shortly after the incident: "Although not a school-related incident, it is unfortunate that a domestic dispute between a mother and son would result in harm to one of our teachers. We will collaborate with law enforcement and provide whatever support is needed to ensure a speedy recovery."

JetBlue pilot spots drone while approaching FLL

A JetBlue pilot had a close call with a drone Monday morning while getting ready to land at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, a Federal Aviation Administration representative said in a Local 10 News "One and Only" exclusive.

"We just had a drone at our location cross over the top of us at 5,000 feet," the pilot told the tower.

The FAA released a statement to Local 10 News shortly after the incident: "The crew of JetBlue 2007, an Airbus A320, reported seeing a Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) on approach to Ft Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 9:37 a.m. today. The pilot did not take evasive action. The FAA will investigate."

The Broward Sheriff's Office said they were also notified about the drone flying in the vicinity of the airport as the plane was about 15 miles west of the airport. A BSO helicopter canvassed the area but authorities said they could not find the drone.

BSO officials said the FBI was also contacted "for tracking purposes as no flying restrictions were apparently broken."

According to FAA statistics, pilots have reported an increase in close calls with drones in the past year.

Nearly 700 incidents with drones have been reported to the FAA this year, nearly triple the number reported for all of 2014, the Washington Post reported.

"Anybody with a couple hundred bucks today can go to Amazon.com or go to the local store, pick one up and go home and launch it in their back yard," pilot Brian Kilcullen told Local 10 News.

The issue has also captured the attention of the Secret Service who first dealt with the issue in January when a small quadcopter drone crashed on the White House lawn.

A rogue drone was also spotted hovering near a West Palm Beach golf course on March 29 where President Barack Obama was hitting the links.

Just two weeks later on April 13, military planes attempted to intercept a white drone that was seen flying in the vicinity of the White House.

According to FAA reports, the drone was last seen flying over the Tidal Basin and heading toward Arlington, Virginia.

American Airlines flight from Miami to Chicago diverted due to unruly passenger

Police are investigating after an unruly passenger onboard a flight from Miami to Chicago caused the pilot to divert the plane to Indianapolis Monday night.

American Airlines confirms Flight 1284 made an emergency landing in Indianapolis just before 6 p.m. so police could remove a woman and her belongings.

Passenger Brian Salvi told Local 10 News he heard a commotion about two hours into the flight, and that the pilot announced a cabin lockdown on the in-flight intercom. He also said the pilot asked able-bodied passengers for assistance in subduing the woman before the plane landed.

Police at the Indianapolis airport said the woman, who hasn't been identified, struck another passenger on the flight, a flight attendant who was attempting to restrain her and the airport police officers that removed her from the plane.

Salvi said officers got on board after it landed and handcuffed the woman before removing her from the plane.

"We had to make an emergency landing in Indianapolis, and at that point you could hear her just kind of screaming for her parents, screaming, 'No,' screaming that she didn't do anything," Salvi said. "It was very, very intense."

The woman is charged with battery with injury, battery without injury, battery on an officer, criminal recklessness, disorderly conduct and disruption of the operation of an aircraft.

Marlins surprise Yelich with SNL lookalike

The newcomer in a Miami Marlins uniform sure looked a lot like Christian Yelich -- except in the batting cage.

Even though they are more than 20 games under .500 as the season winds down, the Marlins had some fun Tuesday evening at Citi Field. They surprised their Gold Glove outfielder by arranging a meeting with "Saturday Night Live" funnyman Pete Davidson, who certainly bears an unusual resemblance to Yelich.

The "twins" have participated in a running joke online this season about how much they look alike.

Davidson dressed in a separate locker room -- complete with a No. 21 jersey that had Yelich's name on the back -- and joined the team on the field as giggling players stretched for batting practice. Strength and conditioning coach Ty Hill, who wasn't in on the gag, got annoyed and shooed Davidson away.

But a bit later, Yelich and Davidson chatted cordially and posed for photos. Davidson borrowed a glove and went to center field with Yelich to shag flies before Miami's game against the New York Mets. And the comedian even grabbed a bat and took a few awkward cuts in the cage, managing a foul tip and a soft grounder that drew cheers and high-fives from the Marlins.

Marlina Shellman accused of beating boy, making him steal food from stores

0

A woman is facing child abuse charges after making a 13-year-old boy steal food from stores, the Broward Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.

BSO spokeswoman Gina Carter said detectives began investigating Marlina Shellman, 32, in March.

According to an arrest report, Shellman was initially arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor on March 28.

Deputies said Shellman would order a 13-year-old boy to go into stores like Walmart and Walgreens to steal food. Deputies said Shellman would beat the boy if he came out empty-handed.

Shellman's relationship to the boy wasn't immediately released, but deputies said Shellman is listed as the boy's caregiver. They said the child's father is in prison in Georgia.

According to the report, the boy had more than 25 marks and bruises on his body, both old and new.

A Special Victim's Unit detective had been investigating the case for several months before presenting it to the State Attorney's Office. Shellman was picked up on an arrest warrant on Monday.

The BSO's Child Protective Investigations Section has 28 reports for domestic violence and child abuse involving Shellman. Carter said "17 of the reports were closed as verified for abuse."

Carter said Shellman had her children removed from CPIS twice, in March 2007 and in May 2011.

The victim has been placed with relatives since the investigation began in March.

Shellman has an arrest history in Broward County that includes charges of grand theft, domestic violence, battery, resisting arrest without violence and driving with a suspended license.

Convicted felon accused of bringing gun into Pompano Beach Chuck E. Cheese's

A 19-year-old convicted felon was arrested Sunday after he got into a fight at a Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant in Pompano Beach, deputies said.

Cleomin Paul faces multiple charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting arrest.

According to an arrest report, Paul was involved in a fight with several people at the arcade when authorities were called.

Deputies said Paul struck one deputy in the chest with both his hands in an attempt to get away.

Authorities said Paul resisted arrest by refusing to put his hands behind his back while two deputies tried to detain him.

As Paul was being taken into custody, deputies saw that he had a firearm in his waistband, the report said.

According to deputies, Paul gave them a false date of birth and misspelled his name while they were questioning him.

A fingerprint identification scanner revealed Paul's identity and a teletype check showed that he had previously been convicted of burglary.
