Alicia Keys recreates iconic Jamaica tourism poster cover

Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys chose an iconic Jamaica tourism poster cover to recreate for her empowering photo shoot. It is the most recognizable tourism campaign Jamaica has ever had, and the original model, Sinatra Arunte Bronte, was thrilled Keys chose her photo to replicate.

"I feel honored that she chose me as the person she would like to represent," Arunte Bronte said. "It has been an amazing ride the last two weeks with all the publicity."

Arunte Bronte, now in her 60s, said she was just 27 years old when, while sitting in the lobby of a Jamaica hotel, a photographer snapped a photo of her. He then asked her to please shoot with him for the tourism campaign. She agreed, and the rest is history.

The Trinidadian was on vacation at the time. She hopes when people look at the poster that they see a proud Caribbean woman.

"I know many Jamaicans were upset that it had to be a Trinidadian woman, but I still think I am a Caribbean woman representing the Caribbean," Arunte Bronte said.

After the poster campaign, Arunte Bronte said, many people approached her about modeling and even acting. She did a few things, but said it was not for her. Urged by her mother to start her own business, Arunte Bronte ran a successful airline charter company for more than three decades.

A Miami police officer was arrested in Miami Gardens last Friday on allegations that he stalked the mother of his two children.

Stephon McGill, 51, faces one count of stalking in the case.

According to an arrest report, McGill parked his white Ford pickup outside the woman's home multiple times, watching her as she entered and left the home.

The woman told detectives that McGill also followed her to a Walmart, and said she drove through a side street and parked in someone's driveway with her lights off in an effort to get away from him.

Police said the couple's 11-year-old daughter and their son confirmed that they had seen their father following them as they left their house.

Detectives said the couple's son also said he saw McGill parked outside their home on three previous nights.

Police said McGill was arrested based on the repeated stalking incidents and the children's admission that their father's actions made them feel uneasy. A Miami-Dade County judge also granted the victim a restraining order from the officer.

McGill has been suspended from the Miami Police Department pending the outcome of the investigation.

"His gun and badge have been taken away pending the outcome of what happens with the Miami Gardens arrest," Miami police Major. Delrish Moss said.

McGill's next court hearing is scheduled for next month.

One person was arrested after the owner of an Oakland Park auto parts store shot one of two armed robbers, Broward Sheriff's Office deputies said.

Conrad Bloomfield, 36, was arrested on charges of attempted armed robbery and attempted murder.

The shooting was reported just before 1 p.m. at Northwest 17th Terrace and 29th Street.

According to an arrest report, Bloomfield and another man drove to CAD Auto Parts in a gray 2012 BMW. Deputies said Bloomfield peered into the office and then walked away. They said the second man then looked into the office and told the shop owner, Andrew Hepburn, 39, "Sorry, wrong address."

Attorney says doctor shot man at Miami Beach high-rise in self-defense

A Miami physician who shot another man to death at the Flamingo South Beach condominium Friday claims he did so in self defense, according to his attorney.

Dr. Andrew Pastewski fired several shots, killing Richard Petik, 40, in a glass enclosed corridor at the Miami Beach building where they both live.

"The unfortunate incident at the Flamingo culminated in an act of self-defense by Dr. Pastewski, who was attacked by an individual who had been threatening, harassing and stalking both Dr. Pastewski and his pregnant fiancée for months," his attorney, Sean Ellsworth, said in an email.

Petik was a disabled Army veteran, according to his family.  He has an arrest record that includes battery and disorderly conduct.

Police confirm they know of past encounters between Petik and Pastewski.

Shortly after the shooting, police detained Pastewski at the building and then released him pending results of an autopsy and the State Attorney's Office investigation.

Pastewski declined an interview.

"My office has been advised that the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office and the Miami Beach Police Department are currently investigating this matter and therefore we will not be commenting further during the pending investigation," Ellsworth said.

Planned Parenthood, Florida reach agreement over abortions

Planned Parenthood says three of its clinics can resume performing first-trimester abortions after reaching an agreement with state health officials.

The organization had asked a judge Monday to allow it to continue performing abortions after state health officials inspected 16 Planned Parenthood facilities. The inspections came after videos surfaced showing organization officials discussing fetal organ research.

The state said three were illegally performing second-trimester abortions, even though they are only licensed to perform first-trimester abortions.

Planned Parenthood said in a statement Wednesday that the Agency for Health Care Administration confirmed those three health centers may continue to perform abortions within 14 weeks of a woman's last menstrual period.

State health officials did not immediately comment.

Similar investigations at Planned Parenthoods in a handful of states, including Massachusetts, Georgia, Indiana and South Dakota, have found no evidence of wrongdoing.

Maduro accuses Rubio, Ros-Lehtinen of funding Venezuela opposition group

0

The president of Venezuela is accusing two U.S. politicians from South Florida of financing right-wing opposition leaders to cause turmoil and violence in his country.

In a state address this week, President Nicholas Maduro said U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., paid cash to the opposition group in the hopes that it would destabilize the Venezuelan government.

"He is a terrorist," Venezuelan-American Jenny Melo told Local 10 News reporter Todd Tongen. "That is how I see him."

There is no love lost between Venezuelan-Americans and Maduro. Nowhere is this more evident than at El Arepazo 2 in Doral, where opinions are served up just as much as the Venezuelan delicacies.

"Miss Venezuela died because of the violence that he provokes," Melo said. "He is involved in it and he produces it -- period."

Manager Lorenzo Di Stefano doesn't believe Maduro's allegations.

"That is not true," Di Stefano said.

The largest concentration of Venezuelans living in the U.S. is in South Florida, particularly Weston and Doral. They are not shy when it comes to criticizing Maduro's regime.

"Every time he talks, he says a lot of different things, just blaming someone else," Vincent Porcar said.

Both lawmakers issued statements denying Maduro's claims.

"Nicolas Maduro has said the late Hugo Chavez once visited him as a reincarnated bird, and it sounds like he's having another similar episode," Rubio said in a statement. "Nicolas Maduro is a corrupt clown, and the Venezuelan people deserve better than the repression, economic mismanagement and human rights abuses they are getting from their current corrupt leaders."

Rubio is a Republican presidential candidate in next year's election.

"This false claim by Maduro is another attempt to concoct a distraction away from his dismal policies that have caused food shortages, high unemployment, a fraudulent electoral process and an economic crisis," Ros-Lehtinen said. "The people of Venezuela know that the fault for this hardship is not due to any outside element, but falls squarely on the shoulders of Maduro and his corrupt regime.  It's heartbreaking that President (Barack) Obama has looked the other way on the human rights abuses in Venezuela and has not added the many names that must be added to the list of violators so that they are denied entry to the U.S. and their assets are frozen."

While Maduro's only proof is people on video making those claims, Venezuelan-Americans living in South Florida weren't surprised by his accusations.

Henry Flores said Maduro is "totally wrong" and blaming somebody different each day.

"Tomorrow he could blame it on me, and I have lived here 20 years," Flores said.

The incidents were reported June 17, July 24, July 28 and July 31 at the Ebenezer Day Care at 4111 SW Fourth St.

Regal Cinemas begins checking bags amid theater shootings

0

Regal Cinemas announced its new policy this week to begin searching customers' bags before allowing anyone inside its theaters.

"Security issues have become a daily part of our lives in America," the company said in a statement. "Regal Entertainment Group wants our customers and staff to feel comfortable and safe when visiting or working in our theaters.

To ensure the safety of our guests and employees, backpacks and bags of any kind are subject to inspection prior to admission. We acknowledge that this procedure can cause some inconvenience and that it is not without flaws, but hope these are minor in comparison to increased safety."

VOTE: Do you agree with the bag check policy?

The recent security measures stem from mass movie theater shootings, including in Aurora, Colorado, where 12 people were killed and 70 others were injured in 2012.

Last month, a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, was targeted. Two people were killed and nine others were injured before the gunman took his own life.

The most recent attack was this month in Tennessee. Officers in Nashville battled Vincente David Montano inside a Carmike theater. Police said Montano attacked three people with a pellet gun, hatchet and pepper spray.

Montano was killed by police.

Video shows woman dragged in street during Wynwood robbery

Police are looking for a woman who attacked another woman in Wynwood in broad daylight last month during a robbery.

The woman told police that she was walking down the street carrying a large purse July 6 when she was mugged, and the incident was caught on surveillance video.

"It happened so fast," a witness, who did not want to be identified, said. "It was like in the blink of the eye she was on one side of the street to the other."

Video of the mugging has gone viral, with more than 130,000 views on Facebook.

"It is a scary thought that this can happen in broad daylight," the witness said. "It was 1:20 p.m., so that alone is terrifying."

Naomi Alonso also witnessed the entire attack.

Surveillance cameras at her business on Northwest 26th Street show a Mitsubishi Galant pass by two women who are walking down the same street. Seconds later, a passenger jumps out of the dark-colored car.

The video shows the person who jumped out of the car attack one of the women who was carrying a large Louis Vuitton purse.

"I heard someone screaming and I thought maybe it was just kids playing," Alonso said.

Despite the struggle, the woman manages to hold on. The driver of the car turns around, picks up the partner in crime and then takes off.

Scared for their lives, the women run off before police arrive.

Business owners in the area said they are taking precautionary measures.

"We only walk out to our cars in groups," Alonso said. "No one stays late by themselves, so again, it is hard to keep track of your surroundings."

No arrests have been made.

Fourth person arrested after teen ambushed, buried in woods

A fourth person has been arrested in connection with the death of a 17-year-old boy whose body was found partially buried in a wooded area near his Homestead home.

Desiray Alisha Strickland, 18, was the latest person to be arrested in the case. She faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of Jose Santos Amaya Guardado.

Kaheem Arbelo, 20, Christian Colon, 19, and Jonathan Lucas, 19, were arrested last week by Miami-Dade police.

According to a police report, the three men admitted to plotting the murder with Strickland.

Detectives said the suspects dug a hole in the woods two weeks before they killed Guardado on June 28 and buried him.

According to the report, Arbelo used a machete to slash Guardado as the group lured him into the woods and ambushed him.

Police said Arbelo's friends watched him kill Guardado, and said Strickland complained that she missed part of the attack because she left for a few minutes to urinate in the woods.

According to the report, as the victim was dying, he was instructed to lie in the grave. Police said Guardado made a final attempt to fight off Arbelo, but was struck by the machete multiple times until his face caved in.

Police said the group then pushed Guardado's lifeless body into the grave.

The suspects got rid of the shovel and murder weapon and attempted to burn their clothes and Guardado's belongings, the report said.

Police said Strickland and Arbelo had sex in the woods until it was time for them to return to campus at the Job Corps.

Guardado's body was found by his brother on July 1.

The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be trauma and ruled the death a homicide.

A motive for the attack remains unclear.

Miami Beach nightlife mogul passed out before boat crash, report says

More information has been released in the boat crash that injured a South Florida nightlife executive and his girlfriend.

According to an incident report, the 25-foot Chris Craft Michael Capponi, 42, and his girlfriend, Brooke Biederman, 23, were riding in crashed shortly before 10 a.m. March 20 at the Coast Guard station near the MacArthur Causeway.

Capponi told Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials that he was heading to a business meeting when he suddenly blacked out.

He said he remembered traveling north on the Melloy Channel, but didn't remember the impact of the crash.

"I remember laying down and looking up and on the seawall -- there's a bunch of Coast Guard guys and they're like, 'Hey, you OK?' Something like that," Capponi said.

According to the FWC report, Capponi's girlfriend rushed to help him and didn't put the boat in neutral. Video shows the boat make a sharp turn and crash into the seawall.

Capponi suffered broken ribs, a shoulder fracture, skull fracture and bruising throughout his body. Biederman suffered a brain injury and is in New York with her family undergoing rehabilitation.

According to officials, Capponi and Biederman were not wearing life jackets. Kill switches or safety lanyards are mandatory on personal watercrafts, but optional on a boat like the one in question.

Neither victim was cited in the crash, which authorities deemed to be caused by "an unfortunate and overwhelming medical condition."

The FWC report also said the blackout could have been related to three previous brain surgeries that Capponi had undergone, or a "current but separate health issue."

No alcohol or drugs were found in the couple's systems, aside from the medication given to them at the hospital.

Taylor Swift promises 'Baby Beethoven' hug

Seven-year-old Jacob can't wait to get the hug Taylor Swift promised him.

After the star heard his piano medley of her fifth album, "1989," his dream came true.

"I HAVE to give you a hug for that beautiful piano medley you did!" the celebrity said on a tweet Wednesday night. "Please come to a show on my tour and say hi to me? My treat."

The countdown is on for Oct. 27 when Jacob -- who is known as "The Baby Beethoven" -- will likely get to meet her in Miami. His journey to meeting the celebrity started about three years ago.

When he was four, Jacob was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, a developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact socially despite having average or above average intelligence.

After appearing on Local 10 News, the piano prodigy made it to Good morning America and CNN. His prodigious talent got him admitted to the National Musicians Guild.

"He can play Bach, Beethoven and Mozart but he prefers to play Taylor Swift any day," said his proud mom, Tina Velazquez.

Earlier this week, Velazquez wrote: "He dreams (literally has dreams) of meeting her every night. I have explained to him that she has millions of fans who would all love to meet her."

Autism Speaks, a nationwide advocacy organization, shared her letter and his YouTube video with their 187,000 followers on Twitter. Then the social media magic happened.

About 5,600 shared the tweet and 11,360 made it their favorite. By Wednesday night, Taylor Swift was blown away by her little fan. He is hoping he can play for her in person.

"She inspires me and she is very nice," Jacob said. "She is the biggest famous person in the world ... I can't wait to go to the concert ... I know she really wants to hug me and I really want to hug her also."

Man taken into custody after standoff with Miami police

0
0

A man was taken into custody Thursday morning after a shooting was reported in a Miami neighborhood.

Sky 10 was above the scene shortly before noon as a SWAT team and detectives stood outside the home at 920 NW 50th St.

Officers were met at the front door of the home by three large dogs, one in attack mode, according to Miami Police Chief Rudy Llanes. Officers fired, injuring one of the dogs.

Neighbors said the dogs bark but aren't vicious.

"They bark and they walk outside. I never hear about it," Alex Euscvio said. "They never hurt anybody."

None of residents inside the home were injured, although for two hours, there appeared to be a standoff before the suspect surrendered.

According to the police chief, concerns about offenders inside the home led to the decision to bring in a contingent of special response team officers and vehicles.

A SWAT team entered the house with rifles drawn and came out without incident about 15 minutes later.

One man was taken into custody, although it's not clear who fired the initial shots that prompted the 911 call, or whether anyone was injured.

The officers involved in shooting the dog are being placed on administrative leave during the completion of the investigation, as is standard for any police-involved shooting.

The dog is being treated for its injuries.
