Deerfield Beach building project halted after remains found at site

The mayor of Deerfield Beach has confirmed to Local 10 News that some sort of remains have been found at the site where a townhome community is being built.

Mayor Jean Robb said the project at the Village Park Development has been suspended as a result of the recent discovery.

"The city of Deerfield Beach is aware of the findings made at the Village Park Development," city officials said in a statement Friday. "The findings have been turned over to the state and all activity at the site has come to a halt. The city hired its own archeologist when the project began and he will be working with the state and the developer to determine what the next course of action will be."

Some Deerfield Beach residents tried to block the idea of developing an old burial ground site. But city commissioners pushed the project through in a 3-2 vote, officially allowing a 69-unit townhome community to be built.

Privately owned and labeled the Old Black Cemetery in city records, it was adjacent to an all black church where land owners allowed members to be buried from 1897 to 1939. The site is said to be home to dozens of graves.

But no markers or gravestones have been seen there since at least 1974 after the land's previous owner bulldozed and cleared the area.

Activists told Local 10 News' Ross Palombo that the site is that of an African-American cemetery.

Two archaeological digs in recent years failed to turn up any signs of remains.

Sam Abrams pitched a career-best four shutout innings of relief, Miami blew a close game open with five runs in the seventh and the Hurricanes beat Virginia Commonwealth, 10-3, on Saturday to earn their first trip to the College World Series since 2008.

Willie Abreu homered and drove in two runs and David Thompson added two RBIs for the Hurricanes (49-15), who swept the super regional 2-0. All nine Miami starters in the order scored, and seven had an RBI.

Abrams (2-0) came in with nobody out and the bases loaded in the third, escaping unscathed. He then worked the next three innings, allowing just one hit.

Logan Farrar hit a leadoff home run and Matt Davis and Jimmy Kerrigan each had two hits for VCU (40-25), which was in the super regional round for the first time.

Rams starter Heath Dwyer (10-3) gave up four runs, three earned, and five hits in four innings.

Lunch with Warren Buffett goes for $2.3 million

Talk about a rich meal.

The winning bid on Friday to have lunch with Warren Buffett was a whopping $2.35 million from Chinese gaming company Da Lian Zeus Entertainment.

Each year, Buffett auctions off an invitation to lunch on eBay. The proceeds go to GLIDE, a charity that runs a number of anti-poverty programs in San Francisco.

Last year, Singaporean businessman Andy Chua paid $2.2 million to dine with Buffett. The highest price ever paid for this power lunch was $3.5 million by an anonymous bidder in 2012.

The winner can bring along up to seven friends. They typically dine at Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York City. Since 2004, Alan Stillman, founder of Smith & Wollensky, has donated at least $10,000 each year to GLIDE to host the lunch.

"The divides are getting bigger between the haves and have-nots. Mr. Buffett inspires others who have the means to help bridge that divide," said Janice Mirikitani, co-founder of GLIDE.

Many bidders hope of striking a special jackpot: the chance to work with Buffett. However, in all these years, former fund manager Ted Weschler is the only person who went on to work for Berkshire Hathaway after he won two consecutive auctions, spending nearly $5.3 million.

Most winners may not have the same fate but they are more than satisfied with the worldly advice they get from Buffett.

Over the past 15 years, Buffett has helped raise over $20 million for GLIDE.

Buffett joined Bill and Melinda Gates to start the Giving Pledge in 2010. Hundreds of billionaires have committed to giving away most of their money either during their lifetimes or in their wills.

Why American Pharoah's name is spelled wrong

Social media erupted in horse emojis on Saturday as soon as American Pharoah crossed the finish line at the Belmont Stakes to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

But it didn't take long for wisecracks and confusion over the infamous misspelling of his name to pop up amid the horse puns and exclamation points.

Without naming names, let's just say at least one major news source got it "wrong" (and by wrong, we mean right), spelling his name "pharaoh" in a tweet, prompting rebukes from social media users.

We've been through this before but let's do it again: The bad spelling came from a mistake in the horse's registration paperwork.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville reported that a fan submitted the name of the horse during an online contest, and spelled "pharaoh" wrong. The woman later told media outlets she checked the spelling before she submitted the name.

Regardless, the misspelling was put on the electronic form to the site where owners register their horses. Now the name is trademarked, the Louisville paper reported.

That hasn't stopped the name from trending in the past with the wrong spelling, though that did not seem to be the case Saturday night.

But as long as American Pharoah's owner, Ahmed Zayat, sticks with it, it seems the rest of the world with have to follow suit.

Besides, horses can't spell.

NBA Finals go on, with Warriors seeming even bigger favorite

The NBA Finals hyped as LeBron James vs. Stephen Curry now seems like James against the Golden State Warriors.

The Cavaliers are down another important player, with Kyrie Irving having surgery Saturday back in Cleveland to repair his fractured left kneecap.

And with what was an already short-handed Cavs team down 1-0 heading into Game 2 on Sunday night, a series that just started has the feel of one that could end quickly.

"(I) understand that we were the underdog coming into the series and with Kyrie being out people are writing us off," James said. "So, I mean, that's fine. That's fine. I'm motivated to get our guys ready to go tomorrow and we will be ready."

James seemed more downcast as he spoke then a day earlier, before the Cavaliers had revealed the severity of Irving's injury following an MRI exam. Irving had been hurt previously in the postseason and Cleveland had won without him, but this time was different.

"Obviously, we've been in this situation, but we always knew at some point he'll come back," James said. "Knowing that he's out for the rest of the finals and out for a period of a long time, first of all, it sucks for him personally. It's a huge blow for our team, especially at this stage."

The Warriors were already the favorites to win the championship after leading the NBA with 67 victories during the regular season. Now, with Irving joining Kevin Love on the sideline, the Warriors were trying to brush away the suggestions that not only should they win, but do it easily.

"No series is unlosable," center Andrew Bogut said. "Stranger things have happened and they're still a great team with arguably the best player in the world. Obviously they're going to have other guys that have to step up to help him get wins, but we can't take this team lightly."

Curry said the mood in the Warriors' locker room was no different than it was going into the series.

"There is no pressure or added pressure, I don't think, because our goal stays the same," Curry said. "We're not really listening to any outside noise or predictions, or who is favored to do what, because we control what we control. When we go out there and play, we've got to play better than we did in Game 1, and that is really our only focus."

Both teams noted how closely the Cavs were to winning Game 1, and in fact the series nearly had a decidedly different feel.

James and Iman Shumpert both missed jumpers on the final possession of regulation. Had either gone in, the Cavs would be the team with the 1-0 lead and would've avoided the overtime period that featured Irving's injury, which coach David Blatt said came when the All-Star point guard was kneed in his knee.

Blatt acknowledged the difficulty of losses like Game 1, saying "they cost you some hours of sleep." But he said the Cavs had moved forward from it.

"You'd love to see us at full strength, obviously, for the finals," he said. "The situation as it is, is what it is, and we are going to come out and play and play to win. Request no quarter and no sympathy. We've got to come out and play, and play to win. That's it."

Matthew Dellavedova was likely to replace Irving for the Cavs, who aren't nearly as deep as the Warriors. James said he could maybe play 40 to 42 minutes in a finals game, but it's hard to imagine even he could do much more than the 44 points he scored in Game 1.

Still, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he would remind his players that the Cavaliers were "still a great team."

"They won two games against Atlanta without Kyrie," he added. "They're still loaded with talent. They're going to be loose. Now all the spotlight is going to be on this injury and all that stuff. It can't affect us. We just go out and play and we've got to do our thing."

The Warriors recalled having games during the regular season where they had a letdown because an opponent was without one of its top players and said they wouldn't let that happen now.

"We're not going to lay down for it just because their great player is out," reserve Andre Iguodala said.

Cute photos show Princess Charlotte, Prince George together

For royal watchers -- and fans of cute children -- they are images to be treasured.

Four photographs released Saturday by Kensington Palace show Prince George with his new baby sister, Princess Charlotte, for the first time.

Princess Charlotte

George, dressed in white and blue, sits holding his royal sibling, all in white and then only a couple of weeks old, in what looks like the image of brotherly affection. In one picture, he even gently plants a kiss on her temple.

And the photographer behind the lens? None other than the young royals' own mother, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

According to Kensington Palace, the photographs were taken by Catherine in mid-May at Anmer Hall in Norfolk, the country home she shares with Prince William when not at their official residence at Kensington Palace in London.

Similarly informal photographs were released of Prince George in August 2013, taken when he was about the same age. Those were snapped by Catherine's father, Michael Middleton, and met a mixed response.

The release of the images comes a day after the palace announced that Charlotte, who's fourth in line to the throne, would be christened on July 5 at the nearby St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham.

Charlotte's great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, has her country retreat in Sandringham, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of London's Buckingham Palace, and the royal family has a long connection with the country church.

The baby girl, whose full name is Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge, was born May 2 at a London hospital.

Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that hit and killed a woman in northeast Miami-Dade County.

Gunshots were fired around 2 a.m. Saturday in the area of Northeast 149th Street and Northeast Sixth Avenue, police said.

A silver sedan was seen speeding from a nearby gas station. Witnesses said a woman, identified by police as Loukucha Joseph, 31, was run over by the sedan.

"All I saw was the lady on the ground and a young girl was trying to help her, trying to resuscitate her," a witness told Local 10 News. "I tried to help her by turning her over like the ambulance told us, but when they got here, it was too late and she passed away."

Joseph had a gunshot wound in addition to being hit by the car, Miami-Dade police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Joseph's death was troubling her cousin, Carline Thelisimon. She had gotten a call from Joseph just minutes before she died.

"She probably needed our help," Thelisimon said.

Family members and friends of Joseph said she was a light in their lives. She was a mother of two and went by Keisha for short.

"She was always a happy girl. Like I said, I knew her since she was a baby," said Serge Toussaint, Joseph's friend. 'When I found out she got killed, I'm like, 'Wow, they die too young nowadays.'"

"Keisha was just a happy-go-lucky person," said Thelisimon. "She's just full of love. I don't understand how this would happen to Keisha."

Police said they found the sedan involved in the crash, but have not said whether the driver has been found.

"That person will get caught," Thelisimon said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the driver of the vehicle to call Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

'Pain & Gain' lawsuit moving to Miami

A lawsuit filed by a businessman over his portrayal in the 2013 film "Pain & Gain" is coming to Miami federal court.

A judge last week ordered that Marc Schiller's lawsuit originally filed in April 2014 be transferred from New York to South Florida.

The film is based on the true story of a criminal gang of South Beach bodybuilders and was made in South Florida. It stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Schiller was kidnapped, tortured and extorted by the gang in 1994. His lawsuit claims the film falsely portrays the gang in a positive way, while he is portrayed by actor Tony Shalhoub negatively and deserving of his fate.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from Paramount Pictures, Wahlberg and other entities involved in the movie production.

A job offer to recent high school graduates by a Las Vegas business is causing heads to turn and steam to come out of the ears of residents.

Of course, those things tend to happen when the business in question is a strip club.

Little Darlings, located just off the famous Las Vegas strip, has begun posting advertisements on its outdoor sign looking to audition recent graduates of the Class of 2015.

One of the messages entices hopefuls by saying "Pay your way through college."

Rick Marzullo, the manager of the club, told KVVU-TV that stripping is a great way to pay the bills.

"We all know the economy isn't that great, [and] it's hard to find jobs sometimes," said Marzullo. "This is an open door for young women 18 years old and up to come and make some good money."

So far there's no word on if there have been any takers.

Lowering of artificial reef of replica Easter Island heads goes wrong; Sculptures crushed

A mishap during the lowering of a massive sculpture into the Atlantic Ocean caused the replicas of Easter Island statues to be crushed.

The 150-foot-long assemblage of 15 giant heads was being installed Sunday off Deerfield Beach. The barge on which the 300-ton sculptures were erected rolled over and shattered the replicas of Polynesian gods.

"At some point, it started to make wave and took in too much water to one side and started flipping," said Arilton Pavan, the owner of Dixie Dives.

The project was intended to create a unique artificial reef and was funded with a half-million-dollar donation from a Boca Raton philanthropist, who let out an anguished moan as the barge begin to list.

"I hope it'll be a great economic benefit and it will put Deerfield Beach on the map," benefactor Margaret Blume told Local 10 News before the lowering.

The barge was supposed to be dropped straight down into the Atlantic Ocean, about half a mile east of the International Fishing Pier.

Project artist Dennis MacDonald said his team spent about 14 hours a day during the planning process.

"It truly was a labor of love," he said.

Despite the mishap, Pavan said there was no damage to the barge.

"There's about 12 to 10 feet of space between the barge and the sand, so it's space there that you can see very while," Pavan said.

An engineer involved in the project told the South Florida SunSentinel the risks were known and workers did their best to pull it off without damage.

A coyote that has been prowling west Boca Raton and snatching dogs was caught and euthanized, a trapper with Bandit Wildlife Management told Local 10 News.

Paul Zambrano said the coyote that was caught in a trap Sunday morning was underweight and had no fear of humans.

Residents in the Timberwalk community and surrounding neighborhood reported several encounters with the coyote last week.

One dog was killed last weekend and a second was snatched while on a walk with the dog's owner Tuesday.

Zambrano set four traps in the area last week, but they were tampered with and had to be replaced.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control said it appears that someone was feeding the coyote.
